Re:Tony Awards.
In the original COMPANY, Susan Browning’s endearing April (the Claybourne Elder role) was Tony-nominated as best actress in a musical, but I think the delightful actress who played Amy was not nominated in any category.
And, besides, Elaine Stritch’s Joanne was nominated as best lead actress in a musical (losing to Helen Gallagher in NO NO NANETTE), whereas Lupone’s Joanne is nominated as featured. Would Stritch have won if she’d been nominated as best featured actress that year (displacing Patsy Kelly’s win in NANETTE?)
