Agreed that there should have been a bigger Sondheim tribute, although I really did like Bernadette. Yes, her voice was stretched a little uncomfortably, but I think that almost added to the emotion.

I thought DeBose was excellent. She sounded and looked great. Her forays into the audience were far less cringe inducing than such things usually are. She was charming, and clearly in love with Broadway: her enthusiasm seemed genuine and contagious.

I do think the performances and production numbers sold their shows well. Based on what I'd read, MJ, Paradise Square and A Stramge Loop were never on my "to see" list. Now, I'm somewhat interested.

Only one person came off as an asshole, and no one really had me wanting to stop watching.

I didn't mind the Spring Awakening number, but why was it included? It isn't being revived right now. They don't normally celebrate the 15th anniversary of original productions on Broadway. It was an odd choice to include. It would have been more appropriate to allow Sharon D. Clarke to perform from Caroline, or add the time to the Sondheim tribute.

As for the masks.... well, I have been out of sync with the mask mandate crowd for awhile. But there is nothing new about such hypocrisy or specific to the Tony Awards about it. I was happy to see their faces.

The Lansbury tribute was nice, and the chorus did great (although I didn't think the lyric editing was done well; they killed a lot of rhymes in condensing it). Understandably at 95, Angela Lansbury might not be up for any further public appearances. Len Cariou seemed weak and lost his focus a little. Even, God forbid, Chita looked a little frailer than I've ever noticed before. All of us, apparently, are older than we ever intended to be. To be honest, LuPone and Peters, although they looked and sounded much younger than their mid-70's, are still in their mid-70's. But I'm getting off topic here...

Sorry you didn't enjoy it as much as I did. Now that I don't live in New York, it's nice to feel connected a little bit, albeit vicariously.
