| Even with an extra hour to play with, the Tonys fell so short of celebrating its theatrical legacy and history. I was looking forward to legendary reunions to mark this one-of-a-kind occasion. Interestingly, I thought LAST year's Tonys did a better job with this: Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel singing ''For Good'' from ''Wicked''; Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp with ''What You Own'' from ''Rent''; Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald with ''Wheels of a Dream'' from ''Ragtime.'' (And they brought back Jennifer Holliday from ''Dreamgirls,'' too!) I guess what we can't know if who was invited to take part, but turned it down. I would've loved to have seen Nathan Lane reunited with Matthew Broderick for ''The Producers.'' Or Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin for ''Sunday in the Park With George.'' Or Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin for ''Evita.'' Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad for ''The Book of Mormon.'' Denzel Washington and Viola Davis for ''Fences.'' Etc., etc. If I'm considering reuniting duos, I doubt I would've ever thought of Josh Lucas and Sarah Paulson from ''The Glass Menagerie'' (2005). In fact, the other two actors from that ''Glass Menagerie'' revival would've been a bigger draw: Jessica Lange and Christian Slater. I love ''Spring Awakening,'' but this reunion would've been more exciting if it had preceded the airing of the HBO documentary. I also would've picked the much more energetic number, ''Totally F*cked,'' even if they had to bleep out the F-word. It would've been more fun than the dirge they did. Other random thoughts: Wow, Joaquina Kalukango was really on fire, belting ''Let It Burn.'' ... Loved Matt Doyle's jubilant acceptance speech and how he brought it back to ''Company'': ''I'm the next bride!'' ... Bernadette Peters was lovely, but the Sondheim salute should've been a bigger deal. ... The ''Six'' segment was soooo late that I practically forgot about it. Has a Best Musical contender ever done their number AFTER the leading actor/actress prizes have been given out? .... And CBS' promo for its sitcom ''Ghosts'' was so funny because it was ''Hamilton''-themed! |
