CBS had ''time to fill with other musical stuff'' last year because the Tonys were structured differently.
If I remember it correctly, almost all the prizes were given out during the 2-hour Paramount portion. The ''big'' prizes, like Best Musical, Best Play and Play Revival, were saved for the 2-hour CBS portion, ''Broadway's Back,'' which focused on lots of musical performances (about 15 of them).
Last night, the 1-hour Paramount portion only covered 11 Tonys, leaving the rest of the Tonys and musical numbers to be on the 3-hour CBS show.
Pet peeve: Best Score (for ''Six'') was given out on Paramount, but Score AND Book always should belong on the CBS Tony telecast. The Tonys used to rotate them. Maybe they still do. But it's wrong. Score and Book are essential to a musical, and without them, there's no show in the first place.
And the last time I looked, ''Girl From the North Country'' is still playing through June 19 (or so says their website). |
