I think that being honest about the product you are selling is vital: SIX, MUSIC MAN, MR. SATURDAY NIGHT, and MJ were true to their shows (whether or not you like them) and should be sure to move the needle. The yiddish scatting had me in tears and absolutely convinced me to purchase a ticket. Personally, MUSIC MAN and MJ lacked any sort of context and were much worse off for it … MJ is already appealing to fans of the artist, so why not try to do a number that shows us how spectacle fits into a musical narrative about his life? The less said about the entire MUSIC MAN performance, the better.

I agree that COMPANY suffered from poor camera work - and, as mentioned in previous threads, I don’t think the opening is staged in a particularly interesting way.

The biggest misfire to me was STRANGE LOOP. Despite the fact that - predictably - the lyrics were a jumbled mess (my girlfriend with no passing knowledge of the show couldn’t make out a single word), I don’t think that medley is an accurate representation of the show. Like it or hate it, the show is much more adult than the seemingly-cute number about a Disney usher and the voices in his head. If someone was inspired to buy a ticket to the show predicated solely on the number (and perhaps BEST MUSICAL award), I think they’d be dismayed to discover that the true DNA of the musical is a considerably darker and edgier tone. I think this could ultimately hurt word of mouth as people encountering a show in such opposition to their expectations are likely to not recommend the musical to others (unless converted by the show - totally possible).

PARADISE SQUARE has been doomed from the get-go. How long are producers willing to wait to see if the Best Actress award moves the needle? It won’t, so how much worse will the bleeding be before it closes?
