I'm pretty familiar with the show's lyrics, having seen the show at Playwrights, listened to the OCR multiple times, and listened to the OBCR just a couple days ago. But it wasn't just the sound design that seemed to gloss over the lyrics - it also seemed like the cast, especially the Thoughts, seemed a bit disconnected from the words coming out of their mouths. Whether it's the direction or having sung these songs hundreds of times over several years, it came off as simply singing a song rather than communicating the VERY dense ideas packed into the lyrics.
Seeing the show on Broadway in a couple of weeks, and interested to see how the show (which I really liked, but fell just shy of loving) has changed since 2019. |
