This is not snark as I like Lenk as a performer and adored her in The Band's Visit. But many have felt she is miscast, in both an aloofness and in terms of the vocal demands of this part. And she was overlooked for a Tony nomination, one might infer in part due to this miscasting. In light of that it doesn't seem odd at all that they would shy away from featuring her singing solo. I haven't seen the revival yet but I have seen this number performed a few times out of context and I am mystified as to what is going on here in terms of the Tony winning best direction. I find the staging very strange and off-putting. But after all the Tony wins I remain curious to see the whole thing.
I loved the Philharmonic concert, which I got to see live and had no idea DeBose was in it, or even who she was back then. Happy for her success. |
