''Company'' is about Bobbie and her friends, so it's only natural that they wanted to show off their ensemble. I imagine the boxy set in their opening is symbolic of Bobbie's cramped world in New York and how she might feel crowded by her friends. Cinematically, it does look claustrophobic.
Still, it would misrepresent ''Company'' to pick a different number that showcases Jamie or Joanna, rather than Bobbie.
However, did they consider doing ''Side by Side''? That's what Neil Patrick Harris and his ''Company'' did at the 2011 Tonys.
As for Michael R. Jackson, I usually don't like to see anyone's mike get cut off ... unless they're going on incessantly too long.
However, Jackson already had his chance to have his say when he won Best Book. And the telecast already was running overtime. |
