One could say a big payoff of DeBose's hosting was to have that opportunity with Chita Rivera at the end of the night. But did anyone else besides me feel that that moment seemed a bit strained?
(Unlike the truly emotional moment of Cynthia Erivo and Danielle Brooks being able to present the award to their Color Purple castmate Joaquina Kalukango. THAT was awesome!)
DeBose's hosting sounded better on paper, so to speak. I think she was trying way too hard - and I'm never a fan of that in a performer.
Also, that last bit of song should have been cut. The Tony's, in past years, have notoriously never been allowed to run overtime. This year it ran extra overtime for THAT? It felt like a moment very much about DeBose and not about the Tonys. |
