Baranski did it at Kennedy Center and Ebersole played it at Papermill 23 years ago in 1999 with Kelly Bishop as Vera, and she seems like she's be a dandy Vera (it was directed by one Robert Johanson?)
But I dare day they are both Veras, not Mames. Ebersole seems more fit to do either role, but maybe being a possible fit for either makes her not quite the perfect choice for either role. Though I would say Lansbury would have made a very good Vera had she been tasked with it. But Ebersole, I don't think, would come close to as perfect for Mame as Lansbury.
And as much as I know Baranski wanted to be a Mame too, I think she really isn't.
But I also think neither Baranski or Ebersole are bigger enough box office names to justify how expensive this revival would have to be, nor would I call them a duo that is exciting enough to get a revival of this on Broadway. |
