| A recurring point in every Mame thread that seems to vex the diehards who keep casting from within the Broadway community. No Mame revival will justify the expense without event casting. Beloved theater stars will pull the core audience, but to finance the show, a Midler or Jackman commitment is surely needed. Ebersole and LuPone didn't sell out War Paint (and I remember discussions on this very board on that score). Arguably, Mame is a hotter -- known -- property. But the Bette-Hugh piece of the megahit equation is needed. A smaller, chamber Mame -- say one that looks like the current Funny Girl -- wouldn't satisfy. And as others will soon remind us: Funny Girl wasn't cheap, even with a smaller company and a flexible unit set. |
