| I re-watched portions and noticed some things: - Billy Crystal doesn't clap AT ALL when Myles Frost's name is announced and he has a completely blank expression. Crystal's an old pro who was not expected to win, so his reaction is notable. Even if he didn't like Frost personally for some reason, I think he would have clapped anyway. I wonder if Crystal is opposed to the whole idea of centering a musical around Michael Jackson and this was his way of showing that disapproval. - The producers took a big risk in having Danielle Brooks and Cynthia Erivo present Leading Actress in a Musical, since it was not clear that Joaquina Kalukango was going to win. But it worked out, and it was great seeing how Brooks and Erivo greeted her. Apparently Brooks and Kalukango have been friends since their Julliard days, and their hug has so much affection in it. The mic picked up Brooks's saying to a weeping Kalukango, "Baby, you deserve this. You deserve this." - How does Kalukango sing like that while she is generating tears rolling down her cheeks? Also, she doesn't do that huge gasping intake of air like Jennifer Holliday does. Part of what makes that final note so impressive is you don't know it's coming -- all of a sudden she is holding the note for an inhumanly long time. And then, at the very end, when you think she is going to peter out, she brings it to a higher note and holds it there. That seems insanely hard -- for those who know more about this professionally, is it that technically difficult to do? - I believe the only presenters who are currently in a Broadway show were Lilli Cooper and Laurence Fishburne. None of the night's nominees presented. I wonder if there was an effort to keep current performers off stage if possible for COVID reasons. Both Cooper and Fishburne did not interact when they presented: Cooper did the explanation of the American Theater Wing's mentorship initiatives, and Fishburne introduced the In Memoriam segment. |
