I admire anyone who takes on a hosting gig when their main skill set is not working a live crowd in a club or in a studio. Guys like Bob Hope and Johnny Carson and Billy Crystal had a monopoly on the job for so long that they set a rather perilously high standard. Even a legendary comedian like David Letterman turned out to be a dud.
Personally I prefer an awards show where the focus is on the awards and the host is not set up as the evening's chief entertainment. NPH hit such a jaw-droopingly high bar with that opening number- aided by a crack team of writers, technicians and ensemble- that it became part of the job description for the host to blow the roof off the joint every year. But nobody-Jackman, Corden, Spacey (!)- could match up.
DeBose has talent pouring out of her but I still think that that isn't enough and I wish they'd go back to a more sober opening focusing on the nominees in any given year. (Even better: add in the shows that may not have been nominated.) Get Christine Baranski, say, or Audra McDonald to host. They could sing one song midway through and otherwise just be an elegant, friendly and classy presence the way Angela Lansbury was when she hosted throughout the '80s. |
