Wonder if they could attract an A-lister like Benedict Cumberbatch? Simon Russell Beale would be ideal but I don't think his name means much to anyone outside the theatre.
I'm not sure that Fagin would be a role that a mid-career star would necessarily want to tackle, with the potential for a dust-up over the potential accusations of anti-semitism? Jonathan Pryce and Robert Lindsay both played it in the Mackintosh revival in the 1990's. Rowan Atkinson, too. And I think Barry Humphreys popped in for a spell.
But I do think Cumberbatch would be great. |
