| The only specific instance I recall is that it was blamed for the closing of the LuPone revivial of Gypsy (January 11, 2008). Personally, I never totally bought that. Gypsy, despite its accolades (and I think it's the best written Broadway musical of all time, even if it's not my personal favorite) has never attracted audiences for a lengthy period of time, and closing in January is very commonplace in every Broadway season, with or without a recession. At the time I was involved in some touring Broadway productions and my recollection is that it didn't have much of an impact. The shows that were selling well continued to do so. The shows that were struggling continued to do so. However, those runs are usually heavily subcribed with pre-paid dollars, so not as vulnerable. |
