| This is an expensive production, funded on the participation of Jackman ... it also wasn't a raved about production, so it's not as if it's guaranteed to lose no steam as a must-see top ticket show without Jackman in it. I think he's very aware he has a major responsibility to do the show unless he can't for health reasons, not just to get as much much in ticket sales as possible for the producers, but to the thousands of audience members who bought full price (or even not full, but that's unlikely) tickets in advance to see him, many probably arranging travel around it. He's very nice, and an understudy having a week or two of announced performances to get their big break is a wonderful idea... but I think there's too much at stake. Also... it's not like this is necessarily a gift to Clayton. He'll be performing for thousands of people who paid real money to see Hugh Jackman... that's not exactly setting him up to succeed. Maybe if a critic returns to see him and writes something good, it wouldn't matter... but I don't know that this many performances missed in a row is a good way to help Max be received warmly. On the other hand, there is a hero narrative available of stepping in for Hugh because of a pandemic, and killing it. But what if... what if he doesn't kill it? Who knows! At the same time, we live in a time when covid can happen any time, and actors will have to be out, and everyone just has to accept it. So who knows. But I sincerely doubt that's what's happening. |
