| We need a big fact check here. I am no Porter devotee, but unless I am woefully misinformed as to the definition of melisma (which I know I am not as I just looked it up again to be sure) to charge that he obscured the melody with a "ton" of melisma is observably untrue. Watch it again. He added one melismatic flourish at the climix, lasting a few seconds of the three minute segment. Honestly, I don't like melisma much myself. But it doesn't support your point to exaggerate. He stood very still and with the exception of one word at the end, sang an incredibly straightforward version of the song using the notes as written. It's fine if you didn't like him, but it's not for a "ton of melisma" ruining the song. |
