And Spamalot & Spring Awakening closed in the next two weeks, marking the shortest span of time in which three Best Musicals closed in such proximity. Not uncommon for January to see a spate of closings, but I recall that being a pretty high profile moment, and the bulk of subsequent seasons seem to have shorter lifespans ... just looking at anecdotal data, those years saw a smaller peak season in terms of open vs dark theaters. Averages of # of active theaters per month by year:
2007: 29 / 2008: 32 / 2009: 27 / 2010: 29 / 2011: 27 / 2012: 29 / 2013: 26.5 / 2014: 30 / 2015: 30 / 2016: 30.8 / 2017: 30 / 2018: 32 |
