All really well put.
I don’t think “rebel” carries the same freighted association as the image of a happy, humming plantation - which to me implies the slaves are participating in this joy - and the very loaded word of “Dixie”. I think you’re right that maybe the lyric should be changed, but I can understand why they felt that verse wasn’t so problematic.
And it is true that New Yorkers do see ourselves as a little rebellious, so Jonny Reb didn’t really come to my mind when I first read the lyric. |
