All of the songs with brand new arrangements that blow the old ones out of the water. (And most importantly, the orchestrations actually build and change during the strophic songs, instead of just being the same thing over and over and over and over for each verse, like the original orchestration was).
Some songs are expanded in interesting ways (the title song), one is cut way down ("I Shall Scream" down to only one refrain!). A lot of new incidental music which again, is much much much less repetitive and much more dramatic and dark than the often cartoonish stuff in the original.
I would single out two songs in particular that have had really wonderful dramatic rethinking due to the orchestrations/arrangements - "My Name," and the quartet reprise of "It's A Fine Life" - both now much edgier, tense and intentionally "ugly" - much more in line with the dramatic intention of those songs. Particularly the latter song, which for years felt to me like a bad joke for its inclusion instead of a truly important part of the scene. |
