I interviewed Willa Kim, the costume designer for ''The Will Rogers Follies, for a profile piece for TheaterWeek magazine in 1991.

Kim revealed what ii was like to work with Tommy Tune, who raved that he loved ''Willa's [use] of color,'' asymmetry and sense of humor.

I also asked Kim about the reviewers who criticized her and said it was sexist to dress its showgirls as dogies [calves] with ropes for tails.

Kim replied: ''Good God! Women wear a lot less than that in ballet all the time and no one ever complains. It's old hat.''

She added: ''The critics don't know how to judge costume design. Most of them have no visual background ...''

At any rate, Kim won her 2nd Tony for dressing ''The Will Rogers Follies'' and made history as an Asian-American artist on Broadway.
