| The workshop production of SMILE with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh was very different from the Broadway show. Leigh died right after the workshop and all of the original creators were canned--except for Hamlisch. The workshop show was closer to the movie and much darker. The workshop had Jane Krakowski, Trini Alvarado, Grover Dale, Maureen McGovern and more. Barbara Streisand recorded "Any Moment Now" from the show with Hugh Jackman (see it on YouTube). The workshop was very different than what appeared on Broadway and very innovative for the time. Like the movie, the book and score were a look at the dark side of the American dream. Sadly, so many wonderful songs by Carolyn Leigh have never been heard from this show and others. She was a genius. |
