Dear World, especially with Donna Murphy, definitely qualifies for Encores original mission. Beautiful score, underappreciated show that is rarely done. Jerry Herman didn't want any of his musicals done at Encores. Since he passed away, we got to see Mack & Mabel, which definitely was a treat, and next year we'll have Dear World. I suspect in the not too distant future we will see Mame at Encores.

Some years ago, Jack Viertel stated that they could no longer afford to do 3 shows a year that were true to the original mandate -- too expensive. Sadly, shows like Zorba!, The Golden Apple, High Button Shoes, I Married an Angel and others just don't sell enough tickets.

I must be the only person on ATC who enjoyed The Tap Dance Kid at Encores. It was an excellent choice, designed to celebrate African-American talent. It was nice to see so many black folk in the audience for a change. The little girl sitting next to me gave every single musical number her own standing ovation. I used the men's room 3 times -- before the show, at intermission, and after it ended and was the only white guy in there.
