I cannot imagine how this could happen when Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald are still not only alive but still performing on Broadway.

And I would include Chita but I think her days of Broadway shows are over... however up through The Visit it would have to be her or Bernadette... Chita had quite a run of late-in-life roles, with A Dancer's Life and major roles in Nine and Drood and an entire new musical built around her, the underrated The Visit. And Bernadette also had an absolutely wild run of shows up until the pandemic, Gypsy, A Little Night Music, Bed & a Chair, Follies, and Hello Dolly! My god. She may also be done doing full productions on Broadway (especially since it doesn't look like Sondheim's almost-finished new show, which she was apparently in the last workshop of with Nathan Lane, will see a production soon -- but who knows)... but until we have more than a few years of no Bernadette in a Broadway show, I wouldn't count her out.

Sutton is not only the leading leading lady, she is FAR FAR from the best. It's no secret that I'm far from the biggest Sutton fan. I think she does what she does very well, but she is rarely well cast in the roles she gets. One man's opinion, not shared by most I think.

But compare Sutton's entire career to Bernadette's recent run alone... or Patti's (Company, War Paint, The Anarchist, Women on the Verge, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Noises Off), or god forbid, Audra's career or recent run... Audra is a SIX TIME Tony Winner, for musicals and plays, lead and supporting, new works and revivals. I mean... Carousel, Ragtime, Master Class, Marie Christine, 110 in the Shade, Henry IV, A Raisin in the Sun, Porgy and Bess, Lady Day, Shuffle Along, Frankie and Johnny... there's no competing.
Sutton doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell against these ladies but especially as a modern day First Lady, against Audra.

And besides Patti and Audra... there's also Kelli to compete with, who I think is a far better singer and also a better actor. The versatility of someone who can nail Light in the Piazza and South Pacific and Pajama Game and King & I and Bridges of Madison County...
They fill very different categories of Broadway leading ladies, and I'm sure Sutton has more fans and impresses more because she dances too, but I'd vote for Kelli first.
