I saw ''Smile'' and all I can recall is Jodi Benson singing ''Disneyland,'' a lovely ballad by Howard Ashman and Marvin Hamlisch.

But many years ago, I somehow got to listen to a cassette of songs from ''Smile'' that were written by Carolyn Leigh and Hamlisch.

Leigh's lyrics were tough, and I remember a tune called ''Nightlife in Santa Rosa,'' a biting indictment of living in a small town. Sara Zahn recorded it for her wonderful CD ''Witch Craft: The Songs of Carolyn Leigh.'' (Also on that CD: ''Killing Time,'' a haunting ballad by Leigh and Jule Styne.)

In 1986, ''60 Minutes'' followed ''Smile's'' journey to Broadway and noted that orchestra seats were $47.50. It closed after 48 performances.

In 2014, there was a ''Smile'' reunion concert, featuring Benson, at 54 Below. And in 2018, a high school in Nyack, N.Y., did ''Smile.''
