I think not nominating it was some kind of weird intentional slight to Herman... and I don't know why. Maybe people were happy to see him have a failure?
But whether the show worked then or ever will, the score is really fantastic.
Personally I think Mack & Mabel and Dear World are notably better scores than Mame and La Cage, and I like both of those a lot (you could even say love).
