CORSICANA tonight

Horribly dull; a nothing of a play - fled at intermission.

No clear idea whose story this is … Sam Gold does nothing with the direction, and neither direction nor design active or elevate this text. In fact (no spoilers), there is a moment in Act One that is so jarringly at odds with the text: it completely removed me and my partner from the play and only made me think about the actors onstage, not the characters or story.

While there are obvious reasons why Gold is drawn to direct stories featuring differently-abled characters, his take on CORSICANA and GLASS MENAGERIE lead me to believe that he is better suited doing Shakespeare? Musicals? Who knows. We can’t ignore the playwright; while personal to him, this play is functionally inert.
