| “Jovial” and “likable” are what win over the “neck-boned, stubborn” townspeople. If Hill were overtly sinister in any way, they would not have warmed to his shpiel. There’s a reason for the phrase about getting more flies with honey than with vinegar. The only notes of sleaze organically manifest in Hill’s facial reaction to Marcellus’s contention that Hill is heading out for a bit of “canoodling” and later when Hill delays getting out of town, saying he’s “not resigning without my commission,” meaning sealing the deal physically with Marian. I think Zaks’s concept of Hill makes perfect sense and works beautifully, especially with Jackman, who exudes a natural likability. |
