I saw all three of those in my college years; WALKING HAPPY was charming; I liked MAGGIE FLYNN, which, like PARADISE SQUARE, tells a story based around Civil War NYC and the draft riots of 1863; "They're Never Gonna Make Me Fight" is a song from MAGGIE that could easily have also been in PARADISE.
ILLYA DARLING had the star presence of Melina Mercouri, plus the hit song 'Never on Sunday," but the rest of the show never took off. It was one of the first examples in my youthful years of theater going of seeing a show that is medicore at best.
I'd love to see WALKING HAPPY and MAGGIE FLYNN again after all these years, but I agree they are unlikely for Encores, but would work as Muftis at the York. And, MAGGIE FLYNN would work at Irish Rep. |
