| I remember ''Chronicle of a Death Foretold,'' a dance piece, and ''Swinging on a Star,'' basically a cabaret revue of Johnny Burke songs, from the 1995-96 season. Both were short-lived: 37 performances for ''Chronicle'' and 96 for ''Swinging,'' and both closed MONTHS before the 1996 Tonys. And I saw both of them, and thought they were so ho-hum. But when the Tony nominations came out, and ''Chronicle'' and ''Swinging'' were nominated for Best Musical, alongside ''Rent'' and ''Bring in da Funk, Bring in da Noise,'' I thought: ''Wow, they really must've hated 'Victor/Victoria' and 'Big'!'' ''Swinging'' was so clearly a space filler for the fourth Best Musical nomination; it was nominated for that, and nothing else. Look, ''Victor/Victoria'' is not a perfect show, but I gotta say I enjoyed it a lot. And I wasn't alone: It ran for 734 performances. But to me, there was no way two lackluster shows, like ''Chronicle'' or ''Swinging,'' were more deserving of a Best Musical nomination. However, the Tonys seem determined to stick it to ''Victor/Victoria,'' nominating only Julie Andrews for Best Actress and nothing else. In my book, Rachel York (for Featured Actress) and Willa Kim (for costumes) did Tony-nomination-worthy work, not to mention Rob Marshall's choreography and Robin Wagner's sets. ''Victor/Victoria'' aside, I still would love to see Andrews get a special Tony. After all, she originated the roles of Eliza Doolittle in ''My Fair Lady'' and Guinevere in ''Camelot,'' and is known worldwide for Maria von Trapp in the 1965 film of ''The Sound of Music.'' She's 86, and in 2024, that'll mark the 70th anniversary of her Broadway/American debut in ''The Boyfriend.'' Two nights ago, the American Film Institute gave her a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Tonys are way overdue to celebrate this legend (while she's healthy) and where her career began: on Broadway. |
