I find it hard to believe that this material will simply be in limbo forever. I'm sure we will see all or parts of it in some form at some point. I imagine that it will take some time for whomever is in charge of Sondheim's work now to assess what's there and make decisions about what's possible. If there's enough extant to get a sense of what Sondheim intended, perhaps other writers will be brought in to finish the material and we might get something resembling a full show.
If not, perhaps an evening of material will be presented in some form, maybe even as a fund raiser for something.
Unless, of course, Sondheim left specific instructions about what is to happen with any unfinished work he might have left behind, an issue that an artist in his 90's might very well have thought about. If he did, I imagine that whomever is in charge now (his widower?) will follow those instructions no matter what they are. As years pass and the work is handed down to others without a strong connection to the man himself, perhaps other decisions might be made. |
