| There’s already been at least one discussion of the backlash to the backlash on this board - I totally forgot to mention people losing friends over the response to Feldstein - so I’m not the only one who’s noticed this. Likewise, the irrational hate is more than a few so-called beloved cranks… most of whom are not beloved to me because much of the “crankiness” winds up being at least casually racist (see the numerous post-Tony threads that boiled down to “White Person X is superior to BIPOC Person Y”) or just downright hostile. I did not mean to imply that anyone who disliked her performance was an irrational hater, but I suppose I have come to expect the worst of people on this subject, so I can’t say you were wrong to get that vibe. In that vein, have people come out and openly said they prefer Benko because she’s thin? Not that I’ve seen, and not that they would, but I don’t think it is immaterial to her appeal, especially for the folks who want some sort of Barbara manqué. That’s why I mentioned it in passing - it’s certainly true, whether or not you share my analysis about its impact - but that’s the tidbit that got the most response. |

| First, I guess I should have put beloved in quotes to make myself clear. Second, I don't generally pay a great deal of attention to unfounded theories so if there has in fact been rampant nonsense of that sort on here as you suggest I guess it flew below my radar (i.e., I ignored it). I have seen some hate directed toward "rich daddy who [as the theory goes] bought his kid a part in a Broadway show" but that's not appearance bias (so far as I can discern) and I am not prepared to indulge a theory that the foundation of the critical (and nominator) consensus (or most of the people I see posting in threads on here) has anything to do with Beanie's appearance vis-a-vis Benko or anyone else. I know better. | |
