”That will probably never happen, unfortunately.”
I would remove ”probably.” And I saw Walking Happy. Being only 9 at the time, I enjoyed it. But even at 9, it seemed to me like it was stolen by the sets and the choreography. Not that it's dreadful, although some of the songs are both pretty bad and really wrong for the show. Some of the songs are both better and reasonably suitable, but a much better musical could (and should) have been made from the source material. Years ago, Peter Filichia wrote an analysis of where things went wrong, more or less song by song, much of which I agreed with.
I might also remove ”unfortunately,” although I would be happy to hear Larry Wilcox's Walking Happy orchestrations live, if the real originals still exist.
Btw, the first ”You're Right, You're Right” and ”People Who Are Nice” were cut shortly after the opening. And since only Hobson was listed in the playbill for the latter, I wonder if what is heard on the cast recording is a version that had already been cut down by opening night at the Lunt-Fontanne. |
