Ventilation is more important than distance in an enclosed space. I think it really depends on how well the air is circulated. Have theaters upgraded their ventilation? I did a quick search but did not find stories stating that they have.

Kimberly A. Prather, PhD, the Distinguished Chair in Atmospheric Chemistry, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, has long been advocating for better filtration. This explanation about distance is from a FAQ about covid-19 that Prather wrote with 11 other scientists:

Like other recommendations, these social distance rules will reduce risk, but not eliminate it. The 6 feet rule is based on the idea that large ballistic droplets fall to the ground within 6 feet, although they can travel farther in a cough or sneeze, up to 28 ft (8.5 m). The 6 feet rule also helps with aerosols that do not settle to the ground because they are most concentrated close to the person who released them, like cigarette smoke is most concentrated close to the smoker. Dilution over distance is the main reason why social distance reduces transmission of COVID-19.

The SF Gate article talks about why the 6-feet rule should be reconsidered and refers to a Swiss study that "demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 can be spread by aerosols over distances of at least 8 meters (26 feet)."

Also, check out the the COVID-19 Indoor Safety Guideline site the lets you run different hypothetical situations using room specification, population, behavior, age group, and viral strain.
