Inside sources: Lea Michele to replace Beanie
Posted by: KingSpeed 06:00 am EDT 06/17/22

It’ll keep box office afloat. Might as well. I’ll go see her in it. I wonder if Beanie’s Dad and brother are pulling out as investors. How does that work?

She was once being considered when they were planning to revive “Funny Girl” year back and had her perform a song at the Tony Awards coming down the aisle of Radio City Music Hall.

Can someone tell me why there appears to be an obsession with this girl getting this role? Like the Earth will split open if she doesn’t.

She has the vocal chops and acting skills.
She resembles Fanny and some of us love her.
The real question is: was there a need to revive FG?
Great score. So-so show. It needs a real vocal powerhouse to pull it off since the score is the best reason to revive it if you’re going to revive it.

She resembles Fanny? Not from the photos I’ve ever seen.

I agree with your other points. Did it really need a revival? For that matter, did Music Man need a revival?

No.

Point taken. She resembles Fanny more than Beanie. I’ve seen some “glamour shots” of Fanny Brice where she is quite attractive, angles and lighting help.
I did enjoy Beanie but didn't do much for the show.

I just saw a comparison clip of Barbra and Lea on Twitter.

Lea shouldn’t get the role just because she can do a passable sound-alike impression.

Reba as Fanny! Her casting made a bad AGYG bearable. Maybe lightning can strike twice. Of course I'm kidding, unless she'd be willing to do it.

I have no idea if this is true, nor do I much care. But I find it odd that anyone would think that Lea Michelle would sell a lot of tickets. I don't think she would have during Glee, and that was many years ago. If I were producing the show I'd just roll with Benko. But whatever. If I get back to NY before the production closes I'll still probably miss it. Nothing I've heard or read really makes me want to see it.

I’ve read tweets where people say they hate her and still want to buy tickets to see her. What do the producers do now? They’re still trying to sell Beanie for three more months but if they announce Lea, everybody will want to buy tix to see FG in the fall. I wonder what the new logo will look like. Plus, I think she should completely redesign the costumes for her. I was an understudy on Broadway many moons ago and the actor I understudied wore a tank top. The costume designer and I knew that was a bad idea for me and they completely designed a new costume for me. So if they can do it for an understudy, they can do it for a replacement.

Growing 'Glee' club of fans

Thanks to streaming, ''Glee'' has never really gone away. It debuted on Fox in 2009, won a number of Emmys, and wrapped after 6 seasons in 2015.

In 2019, Netflix picked up ''Glee,''' and it's been streaming there until Dec. 2021. ... On June 1, ''Glee'' began streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

The 2011 ''Glee' concert film also is streaming on Hulu. (And apparently, you can rent it or buy on Amazon Prime.)

Frankly, I'm still puzzled why Lea Michele didn't open this revival. Playing Fanny was a big deal for her character of Rachel on ''Glee.'' This revival was directed by Michael Mayer, who directed her in ''Spring Awakening.'' Michele even sang ''Don't Rain on My Parade'' at the 2010 Tony Awards ...

So many swirling thoughts. LOL.

I never liked this performance and watching it again I still feel the same way. A major reason is the amount of time she spends with her eyes closed. In general I do not like when people perform with their eyes closed. It seems self indulgent, like they are luxuriating in the sound of their own voice rather than communicating with the audience. I may be reading into this...but at a basic level I know I was taught in acting school to keep my eyes open or I am exclding the audience. Please don't make fun of me, but I saw Spring Awakening 11 times and I don't remember her singing with her eyes closed, do others? Did she do it on Glee (not a fan, only watched one episode). I hope it was just a one off for this Tonys performance.

And it seems like everyone has forgotten all the chatter about "Lea Michelle isn't FUNNY". And of course the other side says "it's called acting" and all that. That might be true, but there is a reason "types" exist and not everyone can play everything. I always thought she exuded an unpleasantness, in general. And from some of the stories from castmates it seems that may not be so off from the truth.

However, I am going to wrap this up by saying I think her time has come to play Fanny. Maybe she's grown. I found her more appealing on the recent Tonys broadcast than I ever have. And Streisand aside---I honestly don't care about Streisand or anyone being like her---I really just want to hear the score sung by someone with a big voice.

EvFoDr, I'd never make fun of you for seeing ''Spring Awakening'' 11 times 'cuz I saw it about a dozen times myself. I make no apologies. I loved it!

I can't remember seeing Michele sing with her eyes closed in ''SA'' either, but her Tony performance isn't necessarily how she'd do it in a show.

Michele also happens to be 12 years older now, and I would imagine that would inform how she would approach the same song in 2022.

I posted the Tonys clip to show that I believe Michele has the power and pipes to play Fanny, something lacking in Miss Feldstein's efforts.

I agree. Her moment has passed. She's gotten a lot of negative press and on-line chatter about her unprofessional behavior. I think her fan base may be smaller than it once was.

To your point, Twitter folk are saying "vicious theater boards are chasing Feldstein out of Funny Girl..."

I didn't know we had the power; had I personally known, I would've used it more persuasively on more important matters.

Fascinating how reviews are suddenly overlooked in these social media indictments, as well as an almost full industry shutout in awards season.

I think it's been said before but I'll say it again now: Look at what's going on in the country, in large part via social media, about matters much more important. Would that these "exaggerations"(i.e.lies)only pertained to Beanie Feldstein.

And September 25th isn't exactly next week, or next month. 14 weeks in a long "chase" out of a production. From some responses in social media, it sounds as if she's been forced to give her last handful of performances. An entire summer of Feldstein Fannys await anyone who wishes to attend, and in this still challenging Broadway season, an entire summer isn't exactly a short run.
