I don't know the answer, but the criteria seems to have become more ... relaxed. Yes, it's always been a P.R. event and photo op, but I've usually associated Sardi's caricatures on its walls with Broadway legends or performers with a storied N.Y. stage history.

And yet ... Alfie Allen from Martin McDonagh's ''Hangmen'' just got his caricature a couple nights ago. Allen is making his Broadway debut in a 10-week limited engagement. And Allen's fine as Mooney n ''Hangmen,'' and got a Tony nomination for Featured Actor. But I didn't think his performance was so singular that it deserved the honor of a Sardi's caricature. It seems so soon. He's probably better known for his role as Greyjoy on TV's ''Game of Thrones.'' Has he done tons of theater in England? Wikipedia only mentions that he once took over for Daniel Radcliffe in a tour of ''Equus.''

Meantime, I don't think there's a Sardi's caricature of Allen's leading co-star in ''Hangmen'': David Threlfall.

Threlfall's a two-time Tony nominee and played Smike in the legendary ''The Life and Times of Nicholas Nickleby'' (1981-82).

Speaking of Sardi's caricatures, I miss the days when they actually were caricatures: where a performer's features might be comically and playfully exaggerated for larger-than-life personalities. Nowadays, the Sardi's portraits look more like colorized, sober-faced versions of their real photos.
