| Random, yes. Yet searching for fitting music for this oddly cold evening I just learned that the classic -- which this odd chill evokes -- comes from a Broadway musical called "Thumbs up!" Music and lyrics by the great Vernon Duke. I'm sure Alan Scott and others knew but its Broadway origins are news to me. Originally sung by J. Harold Murray (1891-1940) at the St. James Theater, where it ran from December 27, 1934 to May 11, 1935. |

| I knew it was by Vernon Duke and from a musical, though I wouldn't have been able to name the musical without looking it up. Also by Vernon Duke and from a musical (Walk a Little Faster, 1932) is "April In Paris," to which "Autumn In New York" is sometimes considered the "follow-up." Stanley Green's book Ring Bells, Sing Songs! is a wealth of information on Broadway musicals of the 1930s. I read it from cover to cover whenever I can't think of anything else to do! ; ) | |

| Duke actually wrote it without commission. He was staying in Westport, CT, in late summer 1934, and was wishing he’d rather be in New York. When he heard that producer Eddie Dowling was looking for a song about Manhattan in the fall for his upcoming revue, THUMBS UP, he offered the song and it was accepted. Even so, it didn’t get much play until Sinatra’s cover in 1947. THUMBS UP also produced another classic, James Hanley’s “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart.” Laura in LA |
