I, too, am kinda surprised Chenoweth has only 1 Tony, and it's for ''You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown,'' over 2 decades ago: 1999!
For the record, Chenoweth won Best Actress in a Musical for ''On the Twentieth Century'' (2015) from both the Drama Desk Awards and the Outer Critics Circle. (The Drama Desk didn't even nominate Kelli O'Hara from ''The King and I.'') However, I believe O'Hara might've edged out Chenoweth at the Tonys because there was the sense that O'Hara was overdue. ''The King and I'' could've marked her 6th Tony nomination without a win.
I'm sure O'Hara was grateful to win for ''The King and I,'' but she's actually said that she sorta wishes she won in 2014: for ''The Bridges of Madison County,'' a show that was especially close to her heart. (It's ridiculous that her ''Bridges'' co-star, Steven Pasquale, wasn't even NOMINATED!).
Anyway, awards are so subjective. In my universe, Chenoweth would've won in 2015, and O'Hara in 2014.
But there's a domino effect. If O'Hara won in 2014, Jessie Mueller would've lost for ''Beautiful.'' You can't win! |
