| My partner and I saw a production of Urinetown at a Chicago area theater last night. During the performance of the song "Run Freedom Run", I started to hear in my head lyrics from "Sobbin' Women", a song from the film musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Am I going crazy or are there similarities between these 2 songs? | |

| Speaking of similarities: Have you noticed that "It's in Your Hands Now" from Road Show is the same song (different lyrics, of course) as "The Ballad of Booth" from Assassins? So unusual for Sondheim to recycle songs. |

| Actually "It's In Your Hands Now" is the same as the cut song, "The Flag Song" and part of it remains in "Another National Anthem: | |

| Listen to It’s Your Hands Now and The Ballad of Booth. I just did. They are exactly the same. | |

| No, they are not "exactly the same." They are not even "sorta the same." The other posters in the thread are correct. The song that got rewritten was "Flag Song," and bits of that song also appear in "Another National Anthem." That's the extent of it. | |

| No, what the previous poster said is correct, Sondheim himself discusses this in either "Finishing the Hat" or "Look I Made A Hat." This is a recycling of "The Flag Song." There are moments at the end during the 'make it proud' section at the end that sort of sound a bit like "Booth," but not really. |

| In terms of lyrics, no, not that i can see. Musically, they do both evoke a traditional (now more "old time") gospel feel. The only (tenuous) lyric connection might be that, while "Sobbin' Women" refers to a woman "fit to be tied," in "Run Freedom Run" Hope Cladwell is literally tied to a chair (and yet still trying to sing and dance with the ensemble). :-) |

| Thanks for trying. No, it wasn't the lyrics in "Run Freedom Run". For some reason the music in the song kept evoking lines like "secretly they was overjoyed" and "make them sobbin' women smile" in my head. | |

| Yes, yes, yes to the MUSIC!! The first time I heard the first 16 bars of "Run, Freedom, Run," the music and the rhythm instantly echoed for me the refrain of "Sobbin' Women"--"them women was sobbin', sobbin', sobbin' fit to be tied; every muscle was throbbin, throbbin' from that riotous ride" was for me completely the "sound and feel" of "run, freedom, run, freedom run away." No, the rhythm and accents are not identical, but I believe the time signature is the same; the melody is not identical, but it sounds very intentionally similar (to me!). Isn't the score of Urinetown supposed to be pastiche--of MANY types? | |
