| In terms of lyrics, no, not that i can see. Musically, they do both evoke a traditional (now more "old time") gospel feel. The only (tenuous) lyric connection might be that, while "Sobbin' Women" refers to a woman "fit to be tied," in "Run Freedom Run" Hope Cladwell is literally tied to a chair (and yet still trying to sing and dance with the ensemble). :-) |

| Thanks for trying. No, it wasn't the lyrics in "Run Freedom Run". For some reason the music in the song kept evoking lines like "secretly they was overjoyed" and "make them sobbin' women smile" in my head. | |

| Yes, yes, yes to the MUSIC!! The first time I heard the first 16 bars of "Run, Freedom, Run," the music and the rhythm instantly echoed for me the refrain of "Sobbin' Women"--"them women was sobbin', sobbin', sobbin' fit to be tied; every muscle was throbbin, throbbin' from that riotous ride" was for me completely the "sound and feel" of "run, freedom, run, freedom run away." No, the rhythm and accents are not identical, but I believe the time signature is the same; the melody is not identical, but it sounds very intentionally similar (to me!). Isn't the score of Urinetown supposed to be pastiche--of MANY types? | |
