The first scene: in a cavernous hanging chamber, a man is put in a noose center stage and when the hanging is conducted, a trap door opens and he falls directly through it until the rope is tight.

After the first scene, the entire cavernous room of the first scene, from the floor to the ceiling of the proscenium, rises until the floor of the chamber is above the proscenium to reveal the bar where most of the play is set.

Thanks for the details. Sounds fascinating, I'd love to have seen it happen.

It was really impressive. The person being hanged is not on a platform or anything, and it happens suddenly, so you have no idea that the trap door is going to open and the poor guy is going to disappear from view entirely. (Did the Atlantic have space under the stage enough to do that?) Then you have no idea this enormous set is going to be raised, and it's raised without the trap door being closed, so you can see the noose (now with no one in it) swinging below the trap door as the set is being raised to the sky.
