''What happened with 'Chicago' at the Drama desk? No nominations? Why?''
For the record, ''Chicago'' DID get 2 Drama Desk nominations: Jerry Orbach for Best Actor in a Musical and Jules Fisher for Lighting, which he won.
So yes, the Drama Desk nominators snubbed Bob Fosse for Director; Chita Rivera and Gwen Verdon for Best Actress; Kander & Ebb for Best Score.
(In Lyrics and Music, they nominated instead Leonard Bernstein (''1600 Penn. Ave'') and Hank Beebe & Bill Heyer (''Tuscaloosa's Callilng Me ...'').
How does this happen? The Drama Desk nominating committee usually consists of 7 to 8 members, and the nominations reflect their tastes.
Clearly, they weren't fans of ''Chicago.'' ... ''Chicago'' fared better at the Tonys, but went 0 for 11 in wins. ''A Chorus Line'' was the golden child.
But the 1996 ''Chicago'' revival might've gotten the last laugh: winning 6 Tonys and is approaching 10,000 performances (and is still going!). |
