| Something that might have factored into its not returning is that Laurie Metcalf's sitcom, The Conners, now shoots a full season's worth of episodes. I know several people who did in fact see it. Their comments were all entirely positive. I remember one friend saying that Everett was not quite as strong as his castmates, but it was so early in the preview period that she expected him to turn that around. She particularly praised Metcalf and Ferran. Perhaps the play is overdone? That would account for it not having box office power, and in a time when fewer people are attending theatre it might be too much of a risk. I believe the few performances the production gave were well attended, however. Maybe Mantello and his cast are all too busy? |

| Somebody I know who sees EVERYTHING saw it and said with 100% confidence that Metcalf would have won her next Tony. I too had tickets for the end of March. For me, that play (along with Death of a Salesman and Cat on the Hot Tin Roof) can never be produced enough! | |

| But you never know. Sometimes a Cherry Jones in Doubt happens... I can't even say who I'd have chosen (probably Kathleen, if I'm honest). While I have no doubt that Metcalf would have been Tony worthy, and nominated, I think it's very possible someone else could have edged her out, especially having won Lead Actress in a Play so recently. If that had been up against Dana H... who knows. |

| And not just 'cuz she's an amazing actress. Or 'cuz she might be the best Martha I've ever seen onstage in ''Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?'' On the morning of the 1995 nominations, the Tonys had asked Kathleen Turner to announce them at Sardi's, and I was there. That season, she was starring in Jean Cocteau's ''Indiscretions,'' alongside Eileen Heckart, Roger Rees, Cynthia Nixon and Judy Law. ... Well, everyone in her 5-member cast got a Tony nomination. Except Turner. I felt so bad and embarrassed for her. But she was a trouper. A class act. I wonder: Did the Tonys give Turner a chance to graciously bow out of the event? Or did she know, and thought: ''F*ck it, I'm reading 'em anyway!''? |

| She was Martha! After the "What a dump?" line she reached up her skirt and pulled off her panty hose! Rupert Everett was just fine but Russell Tovey has been better on stage ( no energy for one ). | |

| For me, that play (along with Death of a Salesman and Cat on the Hot Tin Roof) can never be produced enough! If I get a sense that the revival is as much about the play as it is about the performances then I'm very interested. |
