| I'm happy Horne's honored but wish it didn't come at the cost of erasing the name of a critic who championed Broadway & Off-Broadway for decades. | |

| Atkinson's impact on Broadway theatre in general was much greater than Horne's and I agree that renaming this particular theatre was a poor choice. Although Horne had a huge hit with her Concert for the theatre, her career was largely away from Broadway and I wish there was a movie theater or a concert hall that could be named for her. If we're renaming theatres, why not choose a black woman who had a real impact on Broadway, like Lorraine Hansberry, or someone who had a long career in the theatre like Jane White. Or even someone contemporary like Audra McDonald. Theatres used to be named after contemporary figures all the time back in the day. Ethel Barrymore opened the theatre named for her. So did Lunt and Fontanne, I think. |

| I so agree with you, Jere. Hansberry was the first person I thought of; Diana Sands was another. Her all-too-brief theatrical career deserves to be acknowledged and remembered. Having a theatre named after her would accomplish that. Naming a theatre for Audra is a terrific idea, too, although I do wish that rather than replacing anyone else's name the new names would go to theatres that are not already named for a theatrical individual. Much as I love Lena Horne, she really wasn't of the theater as so many others have been. |

| Yes to everything you say. And yes, Lunt and Fontanne opened "their" theater with THE VISIT in 1958. | |
