Chita was also overdue for a Tony win, with 0 by then, while Gwen had 4 wins

Chita hadn't even been nominated for West Side Story, and lost for Bye Bye Birdie, and also wasn't nominated for Bajour.

Gwen had won for Can-Can, Damn Yankees, New Girl in Town, and Redhead, with a nom also for Sweet Charity.

While this show was Gwen's baby, and happened entirely because of her, and for her, and was tailored for her, and kind of a summation and last hurrah for her incredible talents and career... it was by no means the first time a show had been created around her specific talents and star quality, nor had she been under-recognized by the Tonys prior.

I can't imagine having to choose, and I could see many wanting to vote for Gwen and many wanting to vote for Chita. Ideally it would have been a tie, with Donna in Featured where she belonged. I still find it fascinating that Kelly BIshop managed to win Featured against Priscilla Lopez who has TWO full stand out songs in the show while Kelly has 1/3 of one - though her lines and her delivery were extremely memorable, so were Lopez's. I love them both, but seems unevenly matched. Donna would have beat them all though.

I always wondered why Bishop won too.

I saw the original production as a kid (not with the original cast.)

I remember not wanting Sheila to get hired. (She seemed bitchy to me as a kid.)

Diana was the person I was really rooting for. When he tells her to get back in line it was so sad then of course she gets in and Sheila doesn't.

I've always had this theory (although the books seem to negate it) that the people with the best attitudes get the roles.

For example Diana, Val, Richie all have songs where the overcome stuff. The ones who tell negative stories (all the At the Ballet women) don't get in.

I should add, re: Shelia

My teenage daughter, in whom I have instilled an obsessive passion for musical theatre, watched the revival with me... and she was outraged that Shelia didn't get cast.

The first sentence of your last paragraph may help explain why Donna won. Gwen and Chita may have split the CHICAGO vote.

Fortunately, both Chita and Priscilla Lopez went on to win Tonys.
