The weeks leading into the Tonys are a marathon for nominees. Tony Awards events, press appearances, the *other* awards ceremonies to attend, etc etc add up to a grueling schedule in addition to the 8 shows a week (when many Tony voters are also in attendance, so expectations are high). It’s hard for performers in peak physical condition, let alone someone in their 70s.

I’d bet Patti just needed a break, a decision a don’t think she took lightly.

I saw the show last Sunday matinee, June 19, and she was VERY much on, sounded great and got a standing O after "Ladies Who Lunch." I've never heard she, nor anyone, told that last note for sooooo long. It was thrilling. She knew it, we all knew it. She deserved that Tony.
PS: The whole cast was on that show, actually... Matt Doyle was still on Cloud 9, it might be fair to guess... His smile was infectious.

This describes the performance two nights earlier as well.

Very good points. I'm a fan of hers and know of her dedication.

It's also possible she was sick, which isn't something one can schedule for convenience :)

I don't think she was out long enough for it to be covid.

Especially supporting. Even best revival did little to bump grosses. Only best musical and maybe best play affect sales. M
