And not just 'cuz she's an amazing actress. Or 'cuz she might be the best Martha I've ever seen onstage in ''Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?''
On the morning of the 1995 nominations, the Tonys had asked Kathleen Turner to announce them at Sardi's, and I was there.
That season, she was starring in Jean Cocteau's ''Indiscretions,'' alongside Eileen Heckart, Roger Rees, Cynthia Nixon and Judy Law. ... Well, everyone in her 5-member cast got a Tony nomination. Except Turner. I felt so bad and embarrassed for her. But she was a trouper. A class act.
I wonder: Did the Tonys give Turner a chance to graciously bow out of the event? Or did she know, and thought: ''F*ck it, I'm reading 'em anyway!''? |
