| I saw the Burton "Hamlet" when I was 18. My Mom treated me to a trip to NYC from Wash, DC -- it was very special since my Dad had died 3 years earlier and we had very little money. We stayed at the Waldorf. A young woman in the Hotel elevator asked if I'd like a "date." Refused, but WOW. We were going the next day to see the World's Fair where my actor Uncle was appearing in a Spectacular -- he got us VIP treatment. I bought a standing room ticket. 20 minutes into the production, an older guy and his very young girl friend walked out -- I stopped them and asked if they were leaving and, if so, could I have their ticket. He huffed and gave them to me. 4th Row, aisle. What a night. I can recall scene after scene. I knew the play pretty well -- having studied it both in HS and freshman College. I especially liked Hume Cronyn as Polonius. The play was crystal clear. Thanks for the Memory. |
