| I will remember Ernest Abuba for making his Broadway debut in multiple roles (Adams, Samurai, Noble) in ''Pacific Overtures'' (1976). And when the Off-Broadway revival rolled around in 1984, Abuba moved up to playing the Reciter. This multitalented Filipino-American won an Obie for playing Kenji Kadota in ''Yellow Fever,'' Rick Shiomi's delightful detective spoof. As a playwright, he adapted Louis Chu's historic novel ''Eat a Bowl of Tea'' for the stage. And most notably, Abuba and his former wife, Tisa Chang, founded New York's Pan Asian Rep to feature and foster Asian-American artists. | |

| I never really knew Ernest, nor did I get to see him onstage. But I knew people who knew him, and I did get an opportunity to chat with him once in a one-on-one setting. Seemed like a really kooky guy. A little bit nuts, but in a fun way. I mentioned Pacific Overtures, which I had just recently become interested in, and asked him about his experience doing the show twice. He seemed really happy to talk about it, and I recall he shared an anecdote about Sondheim's incredibly keen ear, guessing where Ernest had been raised based on only the faintest hint of a regional dialect. | |
