| I never really knew Ernest, nor did I get to see him onstage. But I knew people who knew him, and I did get an opportunity to chat with him once in a one-on-one setting. Seemed like a really kooky guy. A little bit nuts, but in a fun way. I mentioned Pacific Overtures, which I had just recently become interested in, and asked him about his experience doing the show twice. He seemed really happy to talk about it, and I recall he shared an anecdote about Sondheim's incredibly keen ear, guessing where Ernest had been raised based on only the faintest hint of a regional dialect. |
